Discover Twickenham with a new family Quiz Trail
Local residents and visitors are being encouraged to discover more about Twickenham with a new Quiz Trail. The trail is designed to inspire people to get out and about and explore the town, learn about its history and have some fun along the way.
Did you know that Rod Stewart was discovered in Twickenham or that Britain’s first ever speed camera, was activated on Twickenham Bridge?
The trail is an ideal way to keep the kids entertained over the school holiday or indeed any time of the year. Unlike seasonal festivals and events, the streets of our town are open year-round and free to access, the history is all around us, it’s helped shape Twickenham town centre and had a far reaching impact on politics, arts and music culture for example. That’s what makes the Quiz Trail such a brilliant vehicle to Discover Twickenham!
But it’s not just for families, it’s made for adults too so you don’t need children with you to enjoy it. Anyone who has an interest in history and getting out and exploring will enjoy finding out new places and unusual facts about the area.
Ricky Pound, House Manager at the Twickenham Museum said “Twickenham is very fortunate with the amount of history on its doorstep. It is such a beautiful area, particularly along the River Thames, that it is a perfect location to find out about the rich visual and cultural history of the area. This trail is a fantastic resource which will enable families and young people to explore around them, noticing little details, encouraging curiosity, and asking questions”.
Discover Twickenham BID commissioned the new trail to encourage people into the town centre and showcase Twickenham’s amazing history and cultural heritage. The trail itself was created by ‘Quiz Trail’ a business run by mother and daughter trio – Liz, Becky and Laura. They have now created over 20 town quiz trails across Surrey, Kent and East Sussex.
Liz said, “We put together trails which pick up the highlights – we point you to look up, look down, look and all around, to things you might just have walked past, because we all usually walk just looking straight ahead. The clues are set from interesting features around the town so you really get to see lots of things you might have missed if you just walked around. Alongside there are lots of pages of local history and stories, all in short articles, so you can take the trail home and have a good read through.”
“My daughters and I have thoroughly enjoyed researching the fascinating local history. Prior to creating this trail, we had no idea that the world-famous ‘Royal Variety Performance’ originated from Twickenham! We’re sure this Twickenham Quiz Trail will show everyone that there’s far more here than just the great rugby!”
The trails have had some fantastic feedback:
“I thoroughly enjoyed doing the quiz trail, I thought the booklets were so informative and helpful. I discovered lots of snippets of info I’d never noticed before.” – Lynda
“Just wanted to say we sooo enjoyed today walking the quiz trail with our grandson. We’ve lived here for 30+ years but still found out things we weren’t aware of.” – Julie
You can also pick up a copy of the trail at a number of local stores around Twickenham at a special introductory rate of just £4 each.
